There are some that have likened the current-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee to that of an American Range Rover. Yet, the price hasn’t quite reflected that. For the heavily refreshed 2014 Grand Cherokee, it still doesn’t. But it’s getting up there, with a much-refined, much-improved model.
Jeep has just announced pricing for the 2014 Grand Cherokee, starting at $29,790 for a base 4×2 Laredo, including $995 for destination and handling, and representing a $1,600 increase from the 2013 model. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4×4 matches the price increase, jumping up another $2,000 to $31,790. Both models come standard with cloth seats and a long list of features, but new for 2014 is an eight-speed automatic transmission that replaces the frankly antiquated five-speed automatic transmission in V-6 models and the six-speed box for Grand Cherokees optioned with the V-8.
Next up, the lineup gets simplified with the Jeep Grand Cherokee making a comeback at $36,790 and $38,790 for two- and four-wheel-drive models, respectively. Those models come in cheaper than their 2013 equivalents, but we imagine there will be some paring of standard equipment to make up for the fact that mid-level Laredo X and Altitude trim levels are gone.
Next up are the Grand Cherokee Overland ($43,990; $46,990) and Summit ($48,990; $51,990) that come with leather, different available Quadra-Trac four-wheel-drive systems, an air suspension, and other features. The Hemi V-8 engine is available and paired to a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
The biggest news for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup is a new engine, though: a 3.0-liter, turbocharged diesel V-6 with 240 horsepower–down 50 horses from the gas V-6–and 420 lb-ft of torque–pulling power. That’s a massive number that stands over the V-8′s output 390 lb-ft. It’s available for $4,200 more than the V-6 in the Limited and Overland models and $5,000 more than a V-6-powered Summit. If you’re working out the premium over the V-8 model, it’s $2,300. And it also gets 28 to 30 mpg on the highway.
Obviously, we’re skipping over the 470-horsepower Grand Cherokee SRT, but we’ll have our review coming soon enough with details on the new super SUV. Expect to see the new Grand Cherokee on lots this summer.
