In a not-so-strange pairing of bedfellows, Fiat has made a video with the site Funny or Die called “Backseat Italians,” which, firstly, shows off the 2014 Fiat 500L’s ample back seat room. Secondly, it helps the Italian brand further carve a niche for itself with…Italianness.
In the three-minute video, we see a couple talking to their salesman about a 500L. Then, they notice that the car they’re about to buy comes with three passengers as standard equipment. Three Italian passengers. Three Italian passengers who don’t speak a lick of English. From there, the hilarity ensues.
From grabbing coffee and meals to paying for parking, the culture barrier is one that seemingly can’t be overcome. But as is the case in any good story, progress is made and a resolution is found. That resolution is far more “funny” than “die” in our opinion.
Recently, we had a chance to drive the 2014 Fiat 500L, saying it was better than its boxy competition, as it should be for the higher price point versus the competition. Powered by a 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged engine that makes 160 horsepower, it’s not the fastest thing on the road. And despite the ads saying differently, it’s not the most stylish thing, either. But the 2014 Fiat 500L definitely has a certain amount of “cool” to it, which we think the Funny or Die video absolutely drives home.
