We’re not sure what we just watched.
We know it’s a YouTube clip for the 2013 Mini Countryman John Cooper Works, a high-performance version of the first all-wheel-drive vehicle from BMW’s small-car brand. We know there’s a guy driving it all through the desert—and then snow-capped mountains—and then the desert again. We know there’s some other guy on the roof of said Mini who looks like Dave Grohl, apparently losing his clothes as he careened down a canyon. And we know the minute-plus clip is called “Expect the Unexpected.”
Mini wasn’t kidding with that last one.
It’s all part of the introduction for the 2013 Mini Countryman John Cooper Works, a 211-horsepower compact crossover. The new Mini, which finds its strength via a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, is the latest top-range John Cooper Works vehicle to give from the automaker.
Mini has always had a quirky take on its advertising. It was just a matter of time before off-road driving, skydiving, and nudists would make it into its advertising. Mini says there’s a conclusion to the spot on its way that should clarify it. We can only hope.
