The 2013 Land Rover LR2 has received a mild refresh for the latest model year that includes a new interior, engine, and other styling tweaks inspired by its popular sibling, the Range Rover Evoque. Most notably, a new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, the same mill used by the Evoque, replaces the 3.2-liter inline-6 that previously served the LR2. Another noteworthy change is the redesigned interior which features a redesigned dashboard layout and center console. Like the redesigned Range Rover, the latest LR2 incorporates styling cues from the Evoque, a plan Land Rover has been migrating towards since the popular compact SUV’s introduction late last year.
The decision to replace the 2.0-liter engine stems from its better fuel efficiency while still providing 10 more horses and 16 more pound-feet of torque over the outgoing 3.2-liter engine. Besides the boost in power, the all-aluminum engine is 88 pounds lighter than the one it’s replacing. A six-speed automatic transmission is mated to the new engine, and this being a Land Rover, it comes with a full-time four-wheel drive system. If your journeys take you through any bodies of water, the 2013 Land Rover LR2 transmission features a remote breather that extends the water wading depth to 19.7 inches. Land Rover’s Intelligent Power Management System is on board for the 2013 LR2 and uses the alternator to charge the battery while slowing down. While decelerating, kinetic energy is regained without using more energy from the engine.
Besides the new engine, the 2013 Land Rover LR2 features a redesigned interior that includes three new colors. The LR2, LR2 HSE, and LR2 HSE LUX come with leather seats and a dual sunroof, which makes the cabin feel lighter and more spacious. Sitting in the middle of the new dashboard is a 7-inch color touch screen which controls the audio, navigational, and climate controls. The normal Terrain Response dial that’s usually featured in Land Rover vehicles is replaced by buttons for the latest LR2. A 5-inch screen also sits in the middle of the instrument cluster and shows important information pertaining to the LR2’s operations including temperature, fuel levels, and gear positioning. The HSE trim is well-suited for those who tow often as a rear view camera with hitch assist is now a standard feature. Hitch assist is a graphic that helps the driver see where the tow ball is in relation to the trailer being pulled.
Another new feature named “Say What You See,” a voice activation system that responds to an occupants command is all-new for the 2013 model year. It works with the audio, optional navigation, and phone systems allowing the driver to interact with each system without taking their eyes off the road. The navigation system itself has also received some improvements and now features a faster hard drive-based system and includes other features like ECO route planning, dynamic zoom, visual lane guidance, point of interest management, and traffic guidance.
Lastly, the refreshed LR2 adds three new exterior colors to its pallet and they include Aintree Green, Havana, and Mauritius Blue. The exterior also has been tweaked with differently shaped headlights and taillights, giving the LR2 a refreshed look. Both the grille and fog lamp bezels feature a bright finish and the surrounding paint on the grille surround, insert bars, and fender vent contrast the front-end. On the LR2 HSE, the grille insert bars, fender vents, and rear finisher strip have been dunked in a light gloss silver finish.
Pricing for the 2013 Land Rover LR2 starts at $37,250 while the LR2 HSE will set you back $39,750 big ones. The top-of-the-lineLR2 HSE LUX trim goes for a cool $42,350 and each of the aforementioned trims include the destination fee.
