The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi a five-star overall vehicle score, the highest possible rating. This score is determined by the severe testing procedures of the NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program that combines performance in front and side accidents, as well as rollover resistance.
The Ford Fusion and Ford Fusion Hybrid have both earned five-star safety ratings. The Ford Fusion Energi had to be tested separately from gas-powered vehicles as the market share for electric vehicles is on the rise. Sales of Ford’s electrically augmented vehicles accounted for 18 percent of hybrid sales last month, which is a major increase from the 3 percent last April.
“The Fusion Energi combines the highest possible safety ratings from NHTSA and great fuel economy, two things we know customers are looking for in their vehicles. Our strategy is to provide our customers with a range of powertrain options in our vehicles, while still leading in fuel economy in every segment that we compete,” said Steve Kenner, Global Director of the Ford Automotive Safety Office.
The Ford Fusion Energi has also been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Fusion Energi features the Personal Safety System, which combines safety belt technologies, front impact airbags, and a network of other components working together during collisions.
