We’ve been seeing a host of data in the past year suggesting the increasing importance of infotainment in vehicles, and it appears Cadillac isn’t missing a beat. The 2013 Cadillac SRX has been refreshed and will now offer an entertainment package featuring a Blu-Ray DVD player that can be viewed on the SRX’s two eight-inch rear-seat screens. We’ve seen this sort of thing before on the Lexus RX 350 and other premium SUVs, but Cadillac’s SRX version includes “kid-tested,” video game-style controllers. Moreover, the new SRX system gives rear-seaters the ability to play a game on one screen, while a DVD can be viewed on another.
If you’ve got a couple of kids to tow on a long road trip, this may be a small blessing. “Having multiple media connectivity options really gives owners flexibility with entertainment, especially families,” said Charlene Goike, rear seat entertainment lead engineer. Caddy kept the kids in mind on this one, even arranging a focus group to optimize the controllers. “The data we collected allowed us to go back and make several adjustments to the system, including simplifying the remote control so that kids could use it without the help of an adult” said Cadillac’s human factors engineer Shannon Chiarcos. If you’re looking to improve your child’s focus and patience, this may not be for you. On the other hand, if you’re like most parents, and are hoping to keep your focus on the road and not what’s going on in the backseat, the rear seat entertainment package will be available on premium SRX models for $1,595.
