2013 Buick Regal Adds No Cost Driveline Additions

Is the Buick Regal America’s best-kept secret?  Buick certainly thinks so, and a growing number of consumers are finding out, thanks to Regal’s host of worthy amenities, performance, and fuel economy. Fortunately, the 2013 Buick Regal, which will be released later this year, is better than ever.

For 2013, the big news for Buick’s Regal is that standard models will receive the eAssist electric motor technology, boosting fuel economy over the previous model by 25-percent. The small, hybrid-electric motor, coupled with the economical 2.4-liter 4-cylinder returns a healthy 36-mpg highway rating, which is 4 mpg better than the Infiniti M35h.

Both the midline Buick Regal Turbo and range-topping Regal GS models return for 2013, but they will now be offered with an additional but more accessible option for consumers–Buick’s AF40 automatic transmission.

“With the Regal GS, we made a conscious decision to go against the current trend and give enthusiasts the manual transmission they desire as standard equipment” said Tony DiSalle, U.S. vice president of Buick Marketing. “Adding an automatic simply makes the performance of the GS even more accessible.”

Buick notes that the 2013 Buick Regal Turbo and Regal GS models equipped with automatic transmission maintains the same 0-60 acceleration time of 6.7 seconds as the manual transmission-equipped models, and even return the same 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway fuel economy rating.

Automotive.com’s take: It’s great to see an automaker listening to its fan base. While we applaud the fact that Buick introduced its sportiest models with a six-speed manual transmission, from a business perspective, it only makes sense to increase its availability to a wider audience.
