On Friday, Toyota President Akio Toyoda released a teaser video of the all-new 2012 Toyota Camry. Well, a video of a redesigned headlight anyway, which looks to be a one-piece, wrap-around unit—details that could help make the Camry more stylish even though the midsize sedan has never turned heads.
“Thanks to you, Camry is the number one car in America,” said Toyoda. “I wanted to ensure that the new Camry is the best Camry ever! We listen carefully to our customers and have done all we have to exceed your expectations. So as a result, the remodeled car improves handling, safety, and fuel economy.“
But fall can’t come soon enough for Toyota—when the new Camry is expected to arrive in showroom floors. The automaker’s usual bland designs underscore the Camry’s importance to the U.S. market—and the recovering automaker. While the Camry has a sizable U.S. sales lead for the year, competitors from Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, and Honda could catch up by the end of 2011. In fact, the Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Cruze, and Ford’s Focus all outsold the Camry in June.
Production photos of the new 2012 Camry have not yet been released, but for the mothers and accountants who didn’t get enough fireworks over the weekend, a now-deleted YouTube cellphone video captured the new look from afar.
On stage, the redesigned XE, SE, and Hybrid sedans rotate on a small pedestal. With a drum-line in the background and flashy electronic flares and bursts on flat-screens on the walls above the vehicles, the appropriately-festive occasion seems well-received on video—despite the Katy Perry soundtrack.
Details were hard to see from afar, but the new vehicle looked handsome with larger wheels, though not as sporty as the original concept. We’re looking forward to seeing better images of the car as we approach the important Toyota’s public debut, but some comments on the low-quality video have already suggested the 2012 Camry resembled a big Corolla.
And maybe that is what Camry lovers want.
