In an apparent expansion of the supplier-based recall that affected Honda and Subaru, now Nissan is recalling a handful of its vehicles for the exact same problem: Side curtain airbags that may not deploy.
According to the NHTSA, a Nissan will recall a total of 976 vehicles for the airbags. The 2012 model year Altima and Versa airbags contain an incorrect mixture in the propellent used to expand the airbag. As a result, the airbag may not fully inflate in an accident, leading to an increased chance of injury.
Nissan will begin the recall on February 27, and will replace any faulty airbag modules free of charge. If you own one of the potentially affected vehicles and would like more information, you can contact Nissan customer service at (615) 725-1000. You can also contact the NHTSA at (888) 327-4236, and reference recall campaign number 12V055000.
Update: This story originally reported that Japanese supplier Takata was the source of the faulty airbags. Currently Autoliv is under investigation by the NHTSA for the fault. We apologize for the error.
