Honda calls its midsize crossover “distinctively sleek, sporty, and fuel-efficient.” While we’re happy to agree with the “distinct” part — distinctly overwrought — we’ll save our opinion about the rest of Honda’s knee-slapping, laugh-out-loud media literature beyond this point. Thankfully for 2012, however, Honda will no longer soil the esteemed Accord name by forcing it onto such an awkward vehicle.
That’s right, the hunchback hatchback from Ohio enters 2012 by going commando with the name Honda Crosstour. Is this a case of Honda moving forward with differentiation, or is Honda distancing its bread-and-butter family sedan from this garish, yet functional, vehicle?
Along with the name change, Honda is offering more standard equipment in its Crosstour EX models including auto on/off headlights, a rearview camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling system, and a USB audio interface. Honda is also changing its red and blue color options.
As for the rest of the vehicle, it’s standard-fare Accord. That is to say, beneath its massive schnoz, Honda equipped the Crosstour with its powerful 271-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine. The interior of the Crosstour is basically straight out of the Accord sedan, too. Whether picking the base front-wheel-drive EX that starts at $31,150, including an $810 destination charge, the front-wheel-drive EX-L that comes with leather, or the all-wheel-drive EX-L, the Crosstour’s interior is a sumptuous mix of luxury and practicality for someone who obviously never chose a book by its cover.
