The 2011 Saab 9-4X midsize crossover has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The 9-4X was given “Good” ratings, the highest possible, in front, side, rollover, and rear-impact evaluations. To earn Top Safety Pick status, cars must also have electronic stability control, a standard feature on the 9-4X. The crossover joins the 2011 Saab 9-5 sedan, which was also recently awarded the IIHS’ highest designation.  “To achieve two Top Safety Picks in three weeks is, of course, extremely gratifying,” said Per Lenhoff, Saab Automobile’s Head of Safety and Development.

The 9-4X is also outfitted with Saab’s third-generation head-restraint system. The technology was initially created to reduce the risk of serious neck injuries from rear-end impacts.

Other midsize crossovers to earn the top mark from the IIHS include the Cadillac SRX, Audi Q5, Infiniti EX35, Lexus RX, Lincoln MKX, Mercedes-Benz GLK, and Volvo XC60.
