One situation many an automaker places themselves when redesigning their cars to be more sporty is focusing on its looks and not the drive.
Specifically, having the car’s appearance match its performance.
I can happily say the all-new Sonata is not one of them. Now is the sedan a Volkswagen Passat or Suzuki Kizashi? No. But it felt more tight and light on its wheels than its prior incarnation or competitors like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. The 198 horsepower inline four pulled strongly especially at highway speeds. The six-speed automatic transmission in the Limited and GLS shifts smoothly while the electric power steering is calibrated to give good feedback. Note, though, owners of the prior generation model will definitely experience more road feel, a common characteristic in sportier cars.
The Sonata is rated at 22 mpg city, 35 mpg freeway by the EPA. I easily exceeded those numbers at 28 mpg+ during my four hours in both vehicles at my normal driving speeds and with the airconditioner and fan at full power.
