Exterior changes to the 2011 Edge and Edge Sport exterior are minor, with the front fascia and headlamps now more in line with Ford’s trucks and the Fusion sedan. We thought the new look gave the Edge a stronger, more unique presence — especially when compared to the more sleek crossovers from the competitors.
The Edge’s interior, in our eyes, underwent the most radical change. Interior design of our 2010 Edge was utilitarian, looking like it belonged more in a truck than a crossover. The aluminum inserts, hard and soft plastics on the dash, and especially the center stack were nothing to write home about. Seating comfort was also just adequate.
The refreshed 2011 Edge interior, on the other hand, appears more upscale, especially in Sport trim. Seat comfort struck a nice balance between cushy and sporty, although we preferred the Sport’s standard leather to the SEL’s cloth.
The biggest change, though, is with the dashboard and center-stack. Ford replaced the 2010 model’s standard dash and its various gauges and dials with a customizable screen which displayed the standard meters on the left side of the screen and infotainment controls and status on the right. The 2011 Edge’s all-new stack replaces the standard buttons and control dials with touch controls housed in a slick, piano-surface finish. Cool-blue ambient lighting outlined the controls and illuminated the rest of the interior. While beautiful and easy to use, more than a few drivers thought the touch sensitivity was a bit on the high side, with one turning on the hazard lights by accident.
