The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently designated the 2011 BMW 5 Series as one of its Top Safety for 2010 – 2011.
“Safety has long been a priority for BMW, so earning a Top Safety Pick from IIHS means a great deal,” said Jim O’Donnell, president of BMW of North America. “This award demonstrates that we left no stone unturned in the development of the all-new 2011 5 Series Sedan.”
As you may know, earning a coveted Top Safety Pick is no easy feat. To do so, a vehicle must earn top marks in every crash test category. That means it must earn a rating of “Good” in high-speed Frontal Offset and Side Impact crash tests, as well as the new Roof Strength test. Also taken into consideration is the vehicle’s Rear Crash Protection and Head Restraints, measuring protection against neck injuries common to rear impacts. To even be considered for the award, a vehicle must also offer electronic stability control. The 5 Series, then, passed all of these tests with flying colors.
