I read several reviews that put the Ford Mustang GT and the Nissan 370Z in the same segment (sports car). By sheer coincidence, I had a chance to drive each back to back.
But outside of sharing the same segment (barely), they’re nothing alike.
The Ford Mustang GT is longer, taller, and wider than the 370Z. This makes sense since the GT’s a coupe. The retro front fascia juts out like a squared jaw boxer, the headlights with the intent to pounce while the lower bumper juts out just enough to dare cars in front to block the Mustang.
Sweeping to the sides and top of the coupe, the Mustang GT continues its purposefulness with the flaring front fenders. And that hood! The hood bulge or power dome looks like it’s about to explode, barely contain the 4.6 liter V-8 engine.
The side panels were surprisingly clean of accents. Door handles and the gas door matched the Grabber Blue paint job. Only a chrome “GT” marked behind the front wheels the coke-bottle finish.
The rear underwent the most radical change from the prior incarnation. Baby got some back with the sloped trunk lid, hexagonal rear lights, and thicker rear bumper. I find it interesting a spoiler was removed from the lid as part of the Track package. I found upper trunk “lip” formed a more subtle one quite nicely.
