2009 Porsche 911: Tweaks hide New Transmission

The latest version of the Porsche 911 is even better than the previous version. Again, rather than sweeping changes, the luxury sports automaker has continued its tradition of continuous revisions, limiting sweeping changes .
It would be easy to assume the tweaks are limited to nothing more than the slightly revised front and rear fascias, the easily noticeable LED rear light clusters, and another new wheel and tire package.

How you would be mistaken.

The most intriguing change is the adoption of a dual clutch transmission like that of Volkswagen and Audi. It’s unfortunate, however, that it likely be viewed in response to VW when, in, fact Porsche has used a twin clutch setup in its race cars as early as the mid-eighties.

The need to make more power than previous versions, as well as the need to meet more stringent economy standards, has led to the adoption of direct injection. The base car’s 3.6 liter motor gains 20 hp to a total of 345 while the Carrera S gains 30 hp to 385 hp.

Our take? Continued tweaking keeps the 911 near the top of its class… again.
