Toyota’s “Behind the Wheel” event was the last, and by no means the least, test drive I took at the OC Auto Show this weekend. The outdoor track was unique because it was designed to test the off-road capabilities of four vehicles: the Toyota FJ Cruiser, Sequoia, Tacoma, and Tundra.
I selected the Sequoia. Why? Among the four, it was the most likely to be selected by those (few) consumers looking for a full-sized SUVs. Honestly, I was more interested in its interior and engine power than how it handled the track’s dirt roads, mounds, and teeter-totter.
And consumers won’t be disappointed. The Sequoia, built on the massive Tundra chassis, could easily fit eight(!) adults comfortable. Interior was typical Toyota quality for the segment. (If you want even more lux, go to Mercedes-Benz or even Cadillac). Interior sound was also typical Toyota quiet which I tested by casual conversation with my rider as he directed me onto the mounds. The Sequoia, by the way, handled said track with ease. Even I felt comfortable with the near forty degree tilts. Course, we drove between 5-15 miles per hour which is more than enough for most drivers on such a track.
My view? If one needs a full-sized SUV, they could not go wrong with the Sequoia. I drove the standard V8 which provided more than enough power for the track, and can easily imagine it handling a full set of passengers, their stuff, and an additional five tons. Fuel economy is 14 mpg city / 19 mpg, which is surprisingly good for a vehicle this size. I’m not expecting a Chevrolet Cobalt here, you know.
