Honda has announced a recall for select 2003 Acura MDX and 2003-2004 Honda Odyssey vehicles for faulty SRS airbag systems. Around 318,000 Odyssey minivans and 56,000 MDX crossovers are being recalled. The SRS airbag system in these models may malfunction due to electrical interference.
Increasing numbers of complaints have been received by Honda, claiming that airbags will deploy inadvertently. The affected models have been equipped with SRS control units with computer chips. Currently no accidents have been reported relating to the faulty SRS system. To prevent this malfunction, Honda and Acura dealers will install an electrical noise filter adjacent to the SRS control unit. Honda is not the first automaker to be affected by this malfunction, as other manufacturers have recalled vehicles for similar issues throughout the last year.
Honda will be personally notifying owners of the affected vehicles by mail in October, and encourages all owners to take their vehicles into dealers when they receive the letters. Honda and Acura dealers will be repaired at no cost to the owners.
To determine if a vehicle needs these repairs, Odyssey owners can contact Honda by phone at (800) 999-1009 and MDX owners can contact Acura at (800) 382-2238, and then select option 4 for each. Owners may also go online to www.recalls.honda.com and www.recalls.acura.com.
