Volkswagen has undergone some recent changes as its leadership stabilizes after dealing with last year’s scandals. Two major upheavals include Martin Winterkorn assuming the chairship (replacing Bernd Pischetsrieder) and the demise of the highly anticipated Passat coupe.
The concept was originally scheduled to debut next month at the Geneva Auto Show with a production model to be unveiled at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. But Winterkorn has put the car, which was conceived to go against Mercedes-Benz CLS, on “hold” and is considering other vehicles such as the new Scirocco and Golf. Apparently, the new chairman and his team wants to review VW and its business operations first before any new vehicle rollout.
Our take? While we’re disappointed with another stall by VW, it will be interesting to see what Winterkorn has in store. He wants, for example, to unify VW disparate vehicles with one recognizable appearance. Will he succeed? Or will he, too, be chewed up and spit out by the corporate goliath that is VW?
