Car Infant Seat Study Flawed

Remember our post earlier this month about how Consumer Report reported that 9 out of 12 tested infant car seats failed to make the grade? Well, the popular magazine has backtracked on its conclusions.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which does its own testing and helps sets the federal guidelines for car seats nationwide, duplicated CR’s testing and discovered the magazine’s findings occurred at speeds over 70 mph. This is twice what CR initially reported in its article.

CR has stated publicly it is currently investigating what happened during its test. Our take? We were skeptical of CR’s first test, wondering why the staff had been conducting them at higher speeds than the NHTSA and other, specialized, agencies. But we were surprised at the gross error discovered by the organization and are keen to read CR’s reasons for the mistake.
