Back in the '60s and '70s, it wasn't uncommon to see a tricked-out van with a lava lamp and killer stereo system. Van enthusiasts all over the country added whatever accessories they could put in their ride much like most scion enthusiasts today.
But we're not here to talk about vans today, which is rapidly going on the way of the dodo due to the onslaught of SUVs.
Or are we? The new Ford Crossover Concept, dubbed the "Airstream", looks a lot more like a descendant of the Ford Aerostar than a new crossover. Like most crossover vehicles, the Ford Airstream sits on a unibody frame which is unlike its Ford Econoline cousin which has a van body that sits on a truck chassis.
Ford Motor Co. insists the Airstream is a crossover category. But vans in the past have been made on a unibody chassis. Our take? Ford should call it a van. why? Then maybe we will have another van enthusiast boom and maybe it won't be so uncommon to see younger people purchasing vans and modifying them to fit their personality. What do you think?
