BMW 5-Series: Sedan or small SUV

According to 4Drivers Only, the next generation of the BMW 5-Series sedan will be tapping parts of its X5 stable mate.

The news is not too surprising if you know the history of both vehicles. The original X5 SUV (or SAV if you’re European or a fan) is based off the 5-Series chassis and an example of “badge engineering”. The (slightly) smaller X5 SUV is based off the 3-Series. Due to their origins, both vehicles can tap into their stablemate’s parts bin. In the case of the 5-Series, the next version will be using the X5’s double wishbone suspension and larger, wider platform.

Our take? Usually larger means less driving thrill to car enthusiasts like us. We have faith, though, in BMW. The X5 is considered one of the sportiest—if not the sportiest—among large SUVs. The new 5-Series, with its new transplanted parts, will most likely retain that character despite its new size.
