Motor Trend gave a sneak peak at the upcoming Phantom Drophead Coupe, a soft-top convertible that uber-lux carmaker Rolls-Royce will unveil next month at the North America International Auto Show in Detroit.

Style-wise, the designers went retro, tapping into the ‘20s and ‘30s to invoke, in their words, “…an indulgent car. It's all about enjoyment, of giving yourself a treat."

The $400,000 convertible, though, is anything but retro. A 6.7 liter V-12 generates an impressive 453 horsepower, easily moving the large coupe. The all-aluminum chassis and body, which is unique among the Rolls-Royce stable, lightens it even further. While a teak wood rear cover for the cloth soft-top needs regular oiling to protect it from the elements, the carpets are a special nylon to minimize wear. Inside, the retro-styled dash, which replaces the tachometer with a power reserve gauge, combines high-tech aluminum trim with real wood.

Our take? $400,000? For a lux-mobile? We’d almost say the Drophead Coupe was "drop dead" before it got of the factory. However, according to Rolls-Royce, it has received over 300 orders already before the car has even hit the showroom. Guess it shows that the rich really do live a different world.
