Toyota Motor Corp. has announced it will unveil a new concept at the North America International Auto Show next month.

The FT-HS is a sports car, an unusual offering for a company known for its focus on the reliability, smooth ride, and quietness of its vehicles. The wedged-shaped and sharply angled coupe’s engine, borrowed from the Lexus hybrid GS450h, will be tuned to a staggering 400 horsepower. Since the engine is a hybrid, the gas mileage will be more than competitive in this segment. There are currently no comparably vehicles at this, making the FT-HS even more unique.

Other interesting features include a hardtop roof which slides, then drops back, into the rear seats instead of the trunk.

Our take? Looks like Toyota is, again, serious in its competition against BMW in developing vehicles that are luxurious but yet fun to drive. The “green” angle using a hybrid engine may give the automaker an approach that BMW, so far, has been unable to even touch.
