In an interview last week, Jim Cain, a spokesperson for Ford Motor *** said that the automaker plans to unveil its 2008 Focus at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month. The announcement is Ford’s response to Americans increasing interest in smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles since Katrina and the surge in gas prices.

Details are scant. The new Focus will undergo a refreshing, most likely with more standard safety features such as airbags and possibly more optional packages.

Our take? The Focus originally debuted in 2000 and, while it has been a seller for Ford in the U.S., it pales in comparison with its European twin which is considered superior in virtually every way from styling, handling, and quality. We continue to scratch our heads as why the company simply doesn’t import it to the eager U.S. market.
