If Porsche ever did a diesel Carerra, it would probably look like the new Audi R8
Motor Trend reports that, according to senior board members at Volkswagen's luxury brand, it has plans for a diesel version of its new R8.
The new engine, a 6.0 liter V-12 with 500 horsepower and 738 pound feet of torque, would be the same as the one in the Q7 SUV and introduced in the A8. Note that this engine generates more torque more than the Lamborghini-derived V-10 but with slightly less power.
Audi insiders cautioned that there are still a few obstacles for the diesel R8. The V-12 diesel is bigger and heavier than the current V-10 and V-8 gas engines. Second, there is a question on whether the diesel particulate filter trap will fit between the R8's mid-engine and its rear bumper.
However, if okayed, it is expected the new R8 will appear in Audi dealerships no earlier than model year 2009.
Our take? We can't wait to see a race between a Lamborghini, the Carerra GT, and the R8. YouTube, anyone?
