Two Chrysler models -- the 300 and the 300C -- will be the first vehicles to feature the Hella LIDAR-based (Light Direction and Ranging) Adaptive Cruise Control as an option in the late 2007 model year. The radio based unit is a key component of Hella’s Driver Assistance Systems Technologies. When activated the system will permit drivers to keep their vehicles at a specified distance from the car in front and will also detect the object’s side to side size and position. It will also automatically brake or accelerate the vehicle on which it appears depending on the traffic conditions.

The device uses an opto-electronic measuring technology and a LIDAR sensor that has a range of nearly one-and-one-half football fields or up to 500 feet in clear weather conditions. The unit also takes inputs from the vehicle’s speed, steering, and yaw rate sensors.

Hella’s Driver’s Assistance Systems Technologies also include an ultrasonic-based parallel parking system, a rear-end collision warning system, a lane departure warning system, rear view cameras and sensors with advanced image-processed software.
