German companies Sick AG and Ibeo Automobile Sensor GmbH, through their Team-LUX, are participating in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA Grand Challenge next year.

The challenge is a contest among driverless vehicles. Team-LUX will be contributing a Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI which will use laser sensors to guide it through the sixty mile course. Team-LUX is quite confident of its entry and technology. "We are competing against the world's best in terms of automobile technology," says Dr. Ulrich Lages, CEO of Ibeo Automobile Sensor GmbH. “Although we are a relatively small team and, unlike the big players, do not dispose of a large budget, we believe we have a great chance at the DARPA 2007. Our innovative laser technology gives us a lead of several years over our prospective rivals, especially in the field of object and environmental detection."

The DARPA Grand Challenge will be held on November 3rd and 4th, 2007. Image is from the 2005 Challenge.
