Leonardo DiCaprio brought the “green vehicle” years ago when he stated he drove a Toyota Prius. Suddenly every celebrity was displaying their “Save the Earth” intent by stepping into their not-so-hot hatchback/5-door. Now, we’re not knocking hybrids. Some of us own them and do find the idea cool that we’re helping the environment by reducing already impressively low emissions. However, we made the decision on our own; to us, celebrities are following our lead.
So we’re amused when TMZ gently reminds the star-struck public that their “green” icons are not so emerald when they leave their hybrid. Julia Roberts’ plane, for example, guzzled 2,100 gallons of jet fuel to shoot the film, “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” George Clooney’s jet expended more than three times that amount for his personal booking. Thus, while we’re crammed in commercial class, we can at least smile that we’re not personally—via our private jets—contributing to pollution. (Leo, though, flies commercial unless, according to his representatives, must absolutely fly in a private jet. Drat.)
