Did Hyundai Motor Co. have plans to drop its famous 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty? Apparently it did since the automaker has announced the plan will be extended to the end of the decade.

Fountain Valley, Calif., 2006 -- Hyundai Motor America announced today that it will extend its industry-leading warranty program, The Hyundai Advantage: America’s Best WarrantyTM, through 2010. Since the 1999 model year, every new Hyundai vehicle sold in the U.S. has been backed by The Hyundai Advantage, covering more than 2.75 million vehicles to date.

“The Hyundai Advantage ensures our owners that we are a partner in their purchase with a vested interested in providing high-quality vehicles,” said Steve Wilhite, chief operating office, Hyundai Motor America. “Ten-year warranty coverage is only possible because of the extremely high quality standards Hyundai has achieved, and we’re excited to offer new Hyundai owners this benefit for at least the next four years.”

The unmatched suite of warranty protection includes 10-year, 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, five-year, 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper protection, seven-year, unlimited mileage anti-perforation coverage and 24-hour roadside assistance coverage at no extra charge for five years (no mileage limit), which includes emergency towing, lockout service and limited coverage for trip-interruption expenses. There is no deductible on any of these coverages.

Our take? Hyundai may have put itself into a precarious position with the Advantage. Just like General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler had found themselves associated with plenty of rebates, Hyundai is known for its warranty guarantee as well as low prices. The automaker, as it tries to go upscale with its vehicles, finds it's walking a tightrope with consumer expectation if it tries to divest itself of the warranty. It doesn't help that other automakers such as GM and Mitsubishi are offering similar warranties.

Yeah, they may have worked their way into a corner with this one. But if their quality is as good as they say it is, they shouldn't be that worried. One trick they could do is kind of shift things around a little so whereas now it may be 10 years, 100,000 miles non-transferrable, they could make it 6 years, 70,000 miles transferrable or something like that. That's what VW did. I had one when they had the 10-year 100,000 powertrain warranty, and believe me, I took advantage of it frequently! But looking at their site, it looks like powertrain coverage for second owners is covered under the standard 5-year, 60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

From what I've heard of VW, that company needs to shift back to 10 years and 100k warranty again. I hear nothing but complaints about VWs.

Hyundai has already given us an all-new Sonata, Grandeur and Santa Fe over the past 18 months, but the South Korean manufacturer has more fresh offerings up its corporate sleeve. An all-new Elantra replacement is waiting in the wings, and this vehicle will be previewed by the Arnejs concept that debuts at the imminent Paris motor show.

Known internally as the FD, the Arnejs (pronounced 'Ar-nez') is based on the same underpinnings as the Kia C'eed concept that appeared at the Geneva motor show earlier in the year. Word is that the eventual production version will be offered as a five-door, as well as in other body styles (these are likely to include a wagon and an MPV). We only hope the showroom versions look as good as the futuristic Paris concept.

Also in Hyundai's product pipeline is a large seven-seat crossover that will be pitched against the likes of the upcoming Subaru Tribeca and Mazda CX-9. The full-size SUV will be named Veracruz, continuing the naming theme established by the Santa Fe and Tucson.
