The BMW Car Club of America took a peek at the November issue of Automobile Magazine and discovered pictures of what could be the future of the 6-Series. (Pictured is the standard 6.)
According to the magazine, BMW is considering stretching the well-know coupe and adding an extra two doors while maintaining the swooping greenhouse. Interestingly, the new four-door will not have a B-pillar. Instead, reinforced sills, side panels, and overlapping doors (i.e., passenger doors close first and open following the front doors) will provide the necessary structure.
Four engines and three transmissions will be also offered. The new 6-Series should be arriving in 2011 when its rival, the new Mercedes-Benz CLS, is scheduled to be released as well.
Our take? BMW apparently decided to take this unusual road due to the success of the CLS. All we ask is that BMW maintains its trademark handling. Otherwise, the four-door 6-Series will be joining CLS as a cruiser, not a lux-bruiser.
