Nissan spokeswoman Madoka Soma announced that the automaker has issued a worldwide recall on its X-Trail and Murano SUVs. The recall involves the “Intelligent Ignition Key” used to start such vehicles. A defective part in the key interferes with the ignition mechanism, allowing the engine to start even when the vehicle is turned off.
Over 50,000 X-Trails, which are sold only in Japan, and over 71,000 Muranos sold in Taiwan, Singapore, and the North American markets, are affected by the recall. Note the vehicles were produced from August 2004 through July 2006.
10,000 Nissan Maxima sedans, which also use such keys, have been included in the recall as well. No accidents have been directly attributed to the issue.
Our take? We're glad, as always, that Nissan is swiftly dealing with this issue and urge owners of such vehicles to contact their dealerships to quickly resolve the matter.
