A camouflaged test model of the upcoming LX470 has been spotted driving around southern Europe, accompanied by engineers, a current Toyota Landcruiser, and Mercedes ML-class.
While the outgoing LX470 is little more than a re-badged Toyota Landcruiser and has been largely unchanged since its introduction in 1998, the upcoming replacement is rumored to be uniquely styled.
Major changes include a new front end design and brand new interior. The front of the new model will include single-unit integrated headlights, a new 3-bar grille, and a new bumper. The rear of the car remains largely unchanged other than a slight redesign of the taillights.
Details about the interior of the new model are scarce, but it is known that it will be even more luxurious and will be equipped with a large navigation screen.
The release date of the LX470 is rumored to be mid-2007. Price should be similar to the $70,000 sticker of the current model.
Our take? Lexus needs to increase the engine power. The 268hp V8 is adequate but the brand new Cadillac Escalade and its 403hp V8 upped the ante substantially. On the other hand, Lexus will hopefully retain the off-road capabilities that the Land Cruiser/LX470 (which is based on the Cruiser) is known for.
