Say it isn’t so. Automotive News reports that Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. may be in talks to form a possible alliance or even a merger.
According to the popular auto industry news source, talks began in July shortly after Nissan / Renault began its own discussion of a similar deal with GM. Last month Fritz Henderson, CFO of GM, approached his Ford counterpart Don Leclair about the alliance again.
Ford has declined comment on the news. Tony Cervone, spokesman for GM, states, "We regularly talk to a number of people in the industry regarding business opportunities of mutual interest. As a matter of course, we don't comment on any of those because in many cases, they simply don't lead to anything."
Our take? This has less substance than most tabloid stories. Not only have such speculations have been around for years, but serious analysis of such mergers have made no sense from the standpoint of either company.
