College students paying more for car mods than school books

The day when many a high school or college student drove their hand-me-down cars from mom and dad may be coming to a close. No, that doesn’t mean they’re buying new cars. Many of today’s students are, instead, modifying (“mods”) their vehicles with some paying big bucks to do so.

According to the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association, students today spend over $4 million yearly to customize their vehicles. Spurred on by the popularity of such shows as “Pimp My Ride” on MTV or movies as the “Fast and the Furious” series, many are adding mods such as new and costly sound systems; nitrous (“juice”) systems; and 20 inch rims. One student reported to have spent over $4,000 to customize his Scion tC.

Our take? What can we say? As enthusiasts, cars are both an art form and object of worship as well as transportation. We just encourage students to think twice before spending all that cash on those new lights before purchasing school books.
