'Hypermiling' to squeeze every last mpg

Joshua Zumbrun met the Fons while picking up his 2001 Honda Insight. Though the hybrid was estimated to get 57 mpg in the city, 56 mpg on the highway, Bradlee Fons and his son, Justin, showed Zumbrun how to improve even that figure.

The technique is called “hypermiling” or improving a vehicle’s gas mileage by changing one’s driving habits. Not launching from a stop, using cruise control, “coasting” are some techniques used by “hypermilers”. Zumbrun, after following some of the Fons suggestions and those found on InsightCentral.net and GreenHybrid.net, was able to milk his Insight into getting over 75 miles per gallon.

Our take? Hypermiling techniques can be used by anyone for virtually any vehicle. (Though we don’t know why one would do so for a Bugatti Veyron.) Learning and applying a few of them will help keep a few dollars from going into the gas tank.

This shows the one flaw in all hybrids: that there is actually minimal gain for the price in this technology. If you were to take a vehicle with the same weight, aerodynamics and engine and implement an engine stop and start for idiling and extended sustained-speed coasting, you could easily achive within 10-percent of the figure allocated to hybrids; but then the smug attitude would just label you a jerk instead of concerned citizen.

I disagree. Hybrids are still an excellent alternative as more Americans care less about driving and instead on their toys (i.e., DVD sets, iPods, etc.)
